District Attorney’s Office Receives Children’s Book Grant From Scholastic

***Office Receives 200 Books to Distribute to Young Crime Victims***

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Office of the Richmond County District Attorney (RCDA) today announced that it has received a donation of 200 children’s books from Scholastic, the global children’s publishing and media company. The books will be distributed through the RCDA’s Sex Crimes Special Victims Bureau to help comfort children who are victims or witnesses to serious crimes.

“I am grateful to the men and women of Scholastic for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of children,” stated District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan, Jr., who has made crimes against children one of the top priorities of his administration. “These books will immediately be put into use to help console young children who have been a victim of, or witness to a serious crime.”

“Scholastic has a long standing mission of fostering a love of reading and learning among all children, and providing books to communities where the need is greatest. Our hope is that the books will provide a sense of comfort and stability to these children and their families during challenging times,” says Karen Proctor, Vice President of Community Affairs and Government Relations.

Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Heidi Tannenbaum-Newman, Deputy Chief of the Sex Crimes/Special Victims Bureau completed the RCDA’s application for the grant through the program. In her grant application, ADA Tannenbaum-Newman noted the importance of these books to the children, “Many of these children are placed in either foster homes or shelters, because of the crimes they have suffered, or their mothers have suffered. These children only often come in only having the clothes on their back.”

The Chief of the Sex Crimes/Special Victims Bureau, ADA Yolanda L. Rudich added, “The generosity of Scholastic will enhance the ability of the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office to provide a child friendly atmosphere for our most vulnerable victims.”
