D.A. Donovan presents funding
for Summer Camp at P.S. 44, Serving “At-Risk” Youth in the
Mariner’s Harbor Area
***UAU Camp Will Host Activities for 100 Youth in July
& August ***
STATEN ISLAND, NY – Richmond County District Attorney Daniel
M. Donovan, Jr. today announced that his office has provided funding,
utilizing funds forfeited from criminals, to United Activities Unlimited
(UAU) to operate the UAU 2005 Summer Camp at P.S. 44, serving 100 children
ages 6-12 years in the Mariner’s Harbor community. District Attorney
Donovan formally presented a check in the amount of $31,250 to UAU’s
Chief Executive Officer, Louis DeLuca, at a ceremony held at the Maple
Parkway school.
“My
office has been aggressively seeking to obtain asset forfeiture from
convicted criminals who have profited from illicit activities,”
stated District Attorney Donovan. “That effort bears fruit when
I am able to provide these much needed funds to support programs such
as this camp which will be a healthy alternative to these kids this
summer. I would like to congratulate United Activities Unlimited for
the positive difference that they have made in the lives of our youth.”
Louis DeLuca, CEO of UAU, stated, “When we lost the New York
State funding for our P.S. 44 programs, I was devastated. My immediate
concern was for the 6 to year olds who are usually in our camp who would
now be left to roam the Mariner’s Harbor development during the
day. I brought my concerns to D.A. Donovan and he said he would be
able
to fund the camp from forfeiture assets. In reality, he took the funds
from the bad guys and gave it to the good kids in Mariner’s Harbor.
We are grateful to the District Attorney for his concerns for the youth
of Staten Island.”The District Attorney’s funding will provide
for personnel, program (gym, play yard, first aid, shirts, arts and
crafts) supplies, admissions, bus transportation, snacks and refreshments.
The camp will run Monday through Friday, concluding on August 19th
and will include: social skills training, recreation, counseling, health
and hygiene workshops, conflict resolution and anger management sessions,
as well as cultural and fun experiences.
