D.A. Donovan: Arraignment of
Defendant in January ‘07 “Park & Ride” Murder

Murder and Related Counts for Fatal Shooting of Ex-Wife, Jeanne Kane

STATEN ISLAND, NY - Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan,
Jr. today announced the arraignment of John Galtieri, 61, of Punta
Gorda, Florida on charges related to the January 30, 2007 fatal shooting
of his ex-wife, Jeanne Kane, 58, of Staten Island, at a Park &
Ride location at 2171 South Service Road. Galtieri entered a plea
of not guilty before Justice Leonard P. Rienzi in State Supreme Court,
St. George and was remanded until his April 13, 2007 court date.
District Attorney Donovan stated, “This indictment alleges
that the defendant shot multiple times and killed his ex-wife, Jeanne
Kane, after driving to a Park & Ride facility where Ms. Kane had
driven to pick-up their adult daughter from an express bus. The defendant
is depicted on surveillance video at the scene during various points
in the day, including the time of the shooting, wearing distinctive
clothing which was later recovered from his vehicle. Galtieri was
also depicted driving a grey Chrysler Concorde which he was driving
when he was apprehended in Colleton County, South Carolina the following
morning. After he was arrested in South Carolina, the defendant’s
car was seized, which included several firearms and various ammunition.
Also recovered from the vehicle was some personal information regarding
the victim. Subsequent investigation has also determined that Mr.
Galtieri stalked the victim for a period from January 16, 2007 through
the day of the shooting.”
Galtieri has been indicted on felony charges of Murder in the 2nd
Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree
and one count of Stalking in the 1st Degree. He has also been charged
with the misdemeanors of Stalking in the 4th Degree, three counts
of unlawful possession of pistol or revolver ammunition and one count
of unlawful possession of rifle or shotgun ammunition. The top count
of the indictment, Murder in the 2nd Degree, carries a top penalty
of 25 years to life in prison.
John Galtieri was apprehended by South Carolina authorities, of the
Colleton County Sheriff’s Department, during a traffic stop
at approximately 9:10 a.m. on January 31, 2007 and was returned Wednesday
to Staten Island, where he was arrested by Detective Thomas Joyce
and P.O. Jennifer Owens of the 123rd Precinct Detective Squad, to
appear on the charges. The investigation was assisted by Lt. Jerry
Polk, Cpl. Wade Marvin and PO Jesse Pringle of the Colleton County
Sherriff’s Office, as well as the South Carolina Law Enforcement
Division.
The case against Galtieri is being prosecuted by Assistant District
Attorney Adam Silberlight of the Supreme Court Bureau; under the supervision
of Paul A. Capofari, Chief of the Supreme Court Bureau. Galtieri is
represented by Mario Gallucci, Esq.
The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent until
proven guilty in a court of law.
