D.A. Donovan: S.I. Man Guilty of Attempted Rape, Robbery & Burglary in Knife-point Home Invasion
*** Michael Delgado, 26, Faces 10 to 25 Years in Prison for 2005 Attack on Port Richmond Woman ***

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan, Jr. today announced that Michael Delgado (DOB: 10/21/1980) of Nicholas Avenue, has been convicted by a jury in Staten Island State Supreme Court on charges of Robbery and Burglary in the 1st Degree, both Class B felonies, and Attempted Rape in the 1st Degree, a Class C felony. The defendant, who has two prior felony convictions, faces a maximum of up to 25 years in jail when he is sentenced by Justice Stephen Rooney on March 26, 2007.

The jury began deliberating Tuesday after a nine day trial and convicted the defendant Thursday morning for an incident in the early morning of May 10, 2005 in which Delgado robbed and attempted to rape a mother of four at knifepoint. Delgado, at knifepoint, robbed the woman of $2,000 and also unbuckled his pants and ordered the victim to remove her nightgown, while her children were asleep in another room. When he laid the knife on her bed, she grabbed it and chased him out of the apartment. Delgado was arrested on May 27, 2005 for the crime. His previous trial, in 2005, ended in a hung jury.

District Attorney Donovan stated, “This conviction is a testament to a brave woman and her young son, who stood by my prosecutors through two trials over nearly two years since this traumatic crime. I am grateful to this jury for seeing the strength of the case against Michael Delgado a three-time loser in our justice system who will now be spending up to a quarter century in jail.”

The case against Michael Delgado was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Yolanda L. Rudich, Chief of the Sex Crimes/Special Victims Bureau, and Assistant District Attorney Michael Drews of the Supreme Court Bureau. The defendant was represented by Alex Shulman, Esq.
